Description
About Sycamore
Sycamore is building the trusted agent operating system for the enterprise. Our platform helps companies build, deploy, and orchestrate agentic apps that take on real operational work, with the security and control large organizations need.
We are a small, engineering-led team working directly with Fortune 500 enterprises. We have raised $65M from Coatue and Lightspeed, along with other investors and industry leaders.
The Role
This is a real engineering internship. You'll own a project that ships, that other people depend on, and that continues running after you leave.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers, contribute production code, and have meaningful ownership from design through deployment. Your project will be scoped appropriately for an internship, but the expectations for quality, testing, and reliability are the same as for the rest of our engineering team.
We're hiring interns across multiple engineering teams. This is one application, and we'll work with you to find the team and project that best align with your experience and interests.
The Teams You Could Join
Core AI
Build the foundational systems that power our AI agents, including agent runtimes, tool execution, memory, durable workflows, model routing, and evaluations. This team focuses on making agentic systems reliable, scalable, and effective in production.
Infrastructure
Build and operate the systems that power Sycamore's platform. This includes Kubernetes-based infrastructure, agent execution environments, cloud deployments, networking, tenant isolation, and observability. You'll help build reliable systems and tools that engineers across Sycamore depend on.
Applied AI/ Forward Deployed Engineer
Work directly on real enterprise problems, helping turn complex operational workflows into production-ready AI applications. You'll build with our platform and see how AI agents solve meaningful business challenges.
What You'll Do
- Own a real engineering project from scoping and implementation through testing, review, and deployment.
- Write production-quality code and participate in engineering reviews.
- Build, test, and debug software, including challenging edge cases and failure scenarios.
- Collaborate with engineers across the team and ask questions when you need help.
- Document your work so others can maintain and build on it.
- Learn how production AI systems are designed, deployed, and operated.
The Environment You'll Work In
Depending on your team, you may work with Python, Go, TypeScript, React, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, GCP, cloud infrastructure, agent runtimes, APIs, distributed systems, and AI development tools.
We use coding agents, automated testing, evaluations, and production feedback as part of everyday engineering.
You don't need experience with every technology in our stack. We care more about strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and your ability to learn and build.
What We're Looking For
- Will have about one year or less left in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program when the internship starts. Our internships are designed with full-time hiring in mind, and strong interns may receive a return offer after graduation. Beyond that, we care about what you’ve built, not your program.
- Experience building something real, whether through internships, personal projects, open-source contributions, or independent work.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and an ability to debug and solve technical problems.
- An interest in building reliable, well-tested software.
- Experience using AI coding tools and an understanding of the code you're building.
- Clear communication and a willingness to ask questions and learn from others.
- Comfort working through open-ended problems in a fast-moving environment.
You don't need prior experience building agentic applications or enterprise software. We're looking for people who learn quickly, enjoy solving hard problems, and care about building things that work.
Location and Timing
We do our best work together, so this internship is full-time and in person at one of our Bay Area offices for its full duration. We aren’t able to offer relocation support, so this is a great fit if you can be here for the whole internship. We’re flexible on dates and just ask for a commitment of at least 10 weeks.
Interview Process
- A 30-minute introductory conversation.
- A 60-minute coding technical interview.
- A take-home project followed by a discussion of your approach and decisions.
Why Join Sycamore
